Student Health Fair Gets Rave Reviews
Interactive Displays Encourage Healthy Choices

A student climbed the stairs to the second floor of the Fine Arts Center early in the day Wednesday, May 6. He was eating a giant red strawberry. Two students passed through the main hallway, eating carrots. Students aren't really allowed to eat in the hallways, and it wasn't close to lunch period. "Where is all the food coming from?" asked one obviously hungry freshman. "The Health Fair," the carrot munchers called back.

The Fine Arts Center Lobby and the Fitness Education Center were soon crowded with students and staff visiting interactive exhibits set up by Mrs. Sammler's Health classes. Mr. Grosodonia and 7th and 8th grade physical education students toured the Health Fair. "The information and activities presented by these students is amazing," he commented, as students took part in fitness tests, including how many push-ups they could complete, or how quickly and accurately they could scooter backward to the opposite side of the room, around a cone, and back to the starting line.

Senior Maria Petrella and junior Nick Sirianni, staffed a display promoting the importance of exercise. Visitors to the exhibit were asked to complete an exercise survey, and then given a brochure describing a variety of fitness options, an exercise calendar, and tips on appropriate diet and nutrition for sports and exercise. A variety of word search activities were also available on fitness related topics. "Our goal is to help them to realize how physically fit they are now, and to show them how to make healthy choices," Maria explained.

An exhibit about the damaging effects of tobacco and nicotine featured a jar with contents equivalent to the damage caused to the lungs after just one week of smoking. Several exhibits provided information about disease control and prevention, such as high blood pressure, and asthma. Displays also warned about the dangers of tanning, drugs, and alcohol, and promoted healthy eating and stress reduction.

"I'm actually learning a lot, and it's fun," said Ben, a 7th-grader waiting in line to try to breathe through a straw at the asthma table. "I hope they don't run out of apples before I get over to the healthy foods."
