Artists in Mrs. Malone's Drawing and Painting B class completed work on a mural-style painting of St. Thomas Aquinas. The piece is comprised of 12 separate squares, each featuring a colorful interpretation of the profile of our school's namesake.
The students worked for several weeks with local artist, Martine LePore, as part of an educational partnership with the Artisan Works gallery on University Avenue. This is the second collaborative project Martine has helped to facilitate at Aquinas. She worked with students on a giant mural in 2008, which hangs in the Student Union.
"We weren't really sure how this was going to look when the squares were all combined," said Deanna Colombo, one of the student artists. "It was hard to imagine, because we were all using similar colors, but in different ways. We had to make sure that each square had a unique look," added Danielle Strachan.
The class saw the assembled piece for the first time on May 20. "Wow, this is impressive," said Bernard Lewis as he entered the room. Following a few final touches, the mural will hang in the new library.
